In the culinary world of South Beach, where restaurants are as fleeting as an August lightning storm, Laura Cullen is betting that her Irish neighborhood bar will become an institution. Right now, though, Clarkes is barely a toddler, turning just 2 years old next week. South Beach is a fickle town for restaurants. Everyone wants to be at the newest place. Even the locals here are transient, says Cullen, who opened the south of Fifth neighborhood spot on Sept. 5, 2005 and plans to mark its second anniversary to the day with a celebration on Wednesday. The eatery, with its brass rail mahogany bar, wall shelves lined bookcase-style with liquor and wine, and handsome vintage-style lamps emitting a gas-like glow, is an anomaly here; theres not a palm tree, half-naked server or mojito in sight (although Im sure Mickey Maher, the Irish bartender, can readily mix one).
Grieving cat needs a checkup
Dear Dr. Fox: Our 10-year-old cat, Julius, lost his two feline companions within a few months of each other early this year. Several weeks after the first one died, Julius began pulling out the fur on his back and at the base of his tail. We tried several things to make him stop and ultimately put him on an antidepressant, Amitriptyline. After two months, he had stopped biting out his fur, and it had all grown back, so we stopped giving him the medication. Now he's back at it again.Do you have any advice for us? We hate to see him pulling out his fur, but we also hate to see him not as happy as he can be. This medication seems to be getting in the way of him making friends with the new cats.-- G.B., Silver Spring, Md.Dear G.B.: Certainly, cats will engage in fur-pulling when they are emotionally distressed.
Hornet, Mucker faithful: rejoice
Beatty and Tonopah football fans ought to love the 2007 season. The Hornets are at home for seven of their nine games, while the Muckers have to travel out of Tonopah only four times during their 10-game campaign. Nevada Class A Central Division Beatty, with Gus Sullivan back for his second season as coach, opens at home Aug. 24 against Laughlin, a 1-A South Division team. The following week, Las Vegas Calvary Chapel, a playoff team in 2006, will visit Beatty. Other home games are Sept. 14, vs. Lone Pine, Calif.; Sept. 22, vs. Big Pine, Calif.; Oct. 12, vs. Round Mountain; Oct. 19 vs. Tonopah, and Oct. 26, vs. Spring Mountain. The road games are Sept. 28 at Henderson International School and Oct. 5 at Indian Springs. Tonopah is at home Aug. 24 against Diamond Ranch Academy of Hurricane, Utah; it's a Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame game, which means THS pays $500 into the NIAA 'Hall' fund.
Applications taken for free or reduced-priced meals at Karnak ISD
The Karnack Independent School District announced its policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. The cost of breakfast is $1 and lunch is $1.75. The reduced price is 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch. Each school or the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. The household size and income criteria will be used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits. Children from households whose income is at or below the levels are eligible for free and reduced-priced meals. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they resided.
