Going into new year, schools get spruced up

Everyone gears up for the first day of school a little differently.

For teachers, there is preparation. For students, there is anticipation. And for maintenance crews, there is rehabilitation.

"Even in the summer, this building gets an awful lot of use, between community groups and sports camps," said Robert Vaughn, principal of Morris Elementary School in Lenox. "So in August, we just kick everybody out and clean it up."

With summer winding down and school doors scheduled to swing open beginning this week — the Berkshire Arts & Technology Charter Public School in Adams starts tomorrow — August is spruce-up time for many of the public educational facilities up and down Berkshire County.

The pre-school routine runs the gamut from basic maintenance to heavy-duty overhauls.

COOKING UP TROUBLE

Every year high school football coaches and players complain about the heat during August practices.

But they say they've never had to face anything like this. The National Weather Service agrees. Since Aug. 1, the average high temperature in the area has been 98 degrees. Practice began Aug. 6 right about the time a high pressure system began to sit on the South.

The heat and humidity is beyond oppressive. It's dangerous, especially for players wearing helmets, dark jerseys and practicing in the oven that is the New Orleans metro area right now, experts said.

Tuesday, for the fourth consecutive day, the National Weather Service issued a heat warning for most of the parishes in southeast Louisiana.

Football teams have always had to deal with heat and humidity, but the recent days have been record-setting.

Lu Wen-hsueh, a 47-year-old man who is switching professions mid-life, and his 12-year-old son, Lu Shih-wei, who graduated from elementary school a couple of months ago, decided to spend the summer vacation taking a walk around Taiwan. The father and son pair set out from the seaside town of Danshui, which is northwest of Taipei, on July 13. The pair spent 50 days walking over 1,200 kilometers, visiting many of the highlights that Taiwan has to offer. Along their journey, they encountered typhoons three times and one earthquake. The Lus are set to arrive back in Danshui on Saturday, completing their long journey.

When the father and son pair reaches their destination in Danshui on Saturday, Lu Shih-wei plans to mimic the scene of American soldiers planting the United States flag on Iwo Jima during World War II.
