Chefs reunite, prepare dishes at Capistrano's

Orlando Rogers is executive chief at Capistrano's Restaurant and Bar in downtown Bakersfield, and has reunited with a few chef friends.

The hookup was to cook-up a special menu for the restaurant, and has been a longtime coming. Rogers said they all went to culinary school in Las Vegas together, but has known a few of them since junior high school.

“We still keep in touch," Rogers said.

The culinary quartet cooked up dishes like BLT stuffed tomatoes, cilantro pasta with shrimp, and apple pie shortcake.

Friday night is the last night the dishes will be served.

Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Reaches Milestone with 1,100 Graduates Since 2003

In the land of the all-you-can eat-buffet, Las Vegas Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts celebrates 1,100 graduates since the school's opening in 2003.

Las Vegas, NV (Vocus/PRWEB ) August 28, 2007 -- The association of Las Vegas with Le Cordon Bleu, a prestigious culinary arts institute with Parisian roots dating to 1895, may seem odd at first glance. But as the city has evolved into one of the country's top five dining destinations – as named by Bon Appetit in 2006 - its need for highly skilled culinary individuals has exploded. Enter Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts - Las Vegas, which opened its doors in July 2003 in the suburban master-planned community of Summerlin – approximately 12 miles from the Las Vegas Strip. The school, housed in a 60,000-square-foot industry-current facility that features 10 demonstration kitchens, has already graduated more than 1,100 students and boasts a current enrollment of more than 700.

Obama rejects Clinton criticism, defends foreign policy plan

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Friday that rival Hillary Rodham Clinton was wrong when she said politicians shouldn't discuss hypothetical decisions on foreign policy.

Speaking at a conference of the National Association of Black Journalists, the Illinois senator defended his recent call for military action to hunt down terrorists if Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf doesn't act. Obama also said it would be "a profound mistake" to deploy nuclear weapons in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Clinton, who has tried to cast her rival as too inexperienced for the job of commander in chief, said presidents shouldn't make "blanket statements" with respect to the use or non-use of nuclear weapons.

"She said, I don't I think we should talk about it.

Tech center to close, but that's a sign of progress

One of the Clark County School District's popular vocational programs will soon cease to exist, arguably a victim of its own success.

The Area Trade Technical Center in North Las Vegas, which offers vocational training and career programs to juniors and seniors enrolled at comprehensive high schools elsewhere in the district, will close at the end off the 2008-09 academic year. The program's final crop of juniors began classes this week.

Next year, only seniors will be enrolled.

Kathleen Frosini, director of career and technical education for the district, said Clark County students will ultimately have a longer list of career and technical programs to choose from at more convenient locations.

"We're expanding the options, not narrowing them," said Frosini, who opened the center as its principal in 1982.
