Follow basic nutrition guidelines and feel better

The beginning of a school year can be similar to the beginning of a new year - we're often looking for ways to improve our lifestyle choices.

In a world of fad diets and high stress, following basic nutrition guidelines is all you need to feel empowered and succeed. Here are my recommendations for healthful eating in the coming school year:

1-2-3: carbohydrates, protein and fat: Carbohydrates are the body's preferred source of energy. We obtain carbohydrates primarily from four food groups - grains, fruit, vegetables and dairy.

To meet daily grain goals, choose high-fiber whole grains. For fruits and vegetables, focus on vegetables, as they provide about two-thirds fewer carbohydrates per serving than fruits. When eating fruits, enjoy whole fruits more often than juice.

Back to school with 5 a day

The number of children achieving their 5 A DAY target has increased by 13% in 2 years according to a report out today by the Department of Health. The Further Evaluation of The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme, launched in the week when millions of children are about to begin a new school year, shows that the scheme is working and could contribute to a reduction of heart disease, stroke and cancer later in life.

Figures show that the number of children achieving 5 A DAY has increased from 27% in March 2004 to 44% in November 2006 and the number of portions consumed has also increased to a point where on average 50% of children in the scheme are close to achieving their 5 A DAY target.

Overall there has been significant increases in the consumption of fruit and vegetables since the last evaluation carried out 2 years ago, and from the baseline measured in March 2004 before the Scheme was introduced into the schools included in this study.

City Hall, group say fiesta a 'huge success'

CITY Hall and officials of the Promote CDO Foundation yesterday said the 2007 Cagayan de Oro fiesta was an unqualified success.

They said the five core events—Agro-Trade Fair, Miss Kagay-an Tourism 2007, Street Dancing/Tableau Competition, First Golden Float Parade and the river activities—were held peacefully without hitches with winners declared without petition.

The Agro Trade Fair's first component was formally opened on August 22 at the Capitol Grounds while the second component, the Regional Trade Fair, kicked-off on August 24 at the Lim Ket Kai Mall.

Both are open to public until August 28 where all top-of-the-line products of the city, as well as that of entire Northern Mindanao area, are on display.

Culinary Leaders Band Together to Raise Funds for Aspiring Chef

Starting a career is a daunting challenge for many. For some it's about finding inspiration which leads to passion. For others it's about overcoming the cost of education or getting an opportunity to show an employer they have what it takes. For aspiring chef Brandon Rodgers, his journey, at one time or another, has been about all three.
