The Accidental Chef: Sushi lover can make it at home with a fresh start

DEAR ACCIDENTAL CHEF: I love all kinds of sushi. It's my favorite thing to eat out, and Richmond has some really great places. However, eating sushi out every week is starting to ruin my budget. I'd like to try to make my own sushi at home, but I really don't know where to start. What tools, books and ingredients should I buy? Are there any places you would recommend for shopping? -- SUSHI LOVER

KONNICHIWA, SUSHI LOVER!: I, too, am a great lover of raw fish. From the time I tried my first piece of toro (the highly prized fatty cut of tuna) sitting bar side at a dive of a sushi joint in New York City, I was hooked (pardon the cliché) on the fresh, delicate mouthfeel of raw fish set atop a flawlessly shaped, oval mound of vinegared rice. And you're right about cost -- sharing the love boat platter and a couple of cans of Sapporo can set a couple back close to 100 bucks with tax and tip.

Edwina's Story: Celebrating the Empowerment of Women in Africa

Washington, D.C.

In the village of Nyanga, in Ntungamo District, Uganda, 18-year-old Edwina gazes out the window of her family’s small house, lost in big thoughts. Edwina, the third of nine children, is determined to become a doctor. Her surname, Atusingwire, is a Banyankore name meaning "she has overcome or succeeded" – Edwina thinks of this not merely as a name, but as a prophecy to be fulfilled.

She points to the trees outside her window and breaks her silence. "All these banana plants used to be ours," she says. Edwina’s soft-spoken voice conveys a warm spirit and sharp intellect. Her large eyes, yellowed from a lingering case of malaria, tell a story of their own.

At 15, Edwina was an excellent student, but her family had no money left to pay for her education.
