Stroke survivor to run for dad with $10,000 fund-raising goal

SHIRLEY -- After surviving a stroke this summer, Frank Mastrangelo is continuing to train for a half-marathon at Disney World in Florida.

A fund-raiser sponsored by the American Stroke Association, the event's signature logo is, "The real finish line is an end to stroke."

Mastrangelo, 42, made plans to take part in the event -- slated for Jan. 13, 2008 -- after his father died of a stroke last year. He started training in March. Though he isn't sure doctors will clear it, he said the run is a go so far.

In addition to training, he's raising funds and has support from family, friends and colleagues. His goal is $10,000, of which he's raised about half. The money goes to research and stroke education.

Meanwhile, Mastrangelo has traded fast food for fruit and a perch on the living room couch for exercises on the road and at the gym.

One of a family of eight, Laura was used to economizing. Her mother taught her how to can fruits and vegetables. Now in charge of the Penn State Cooperative Extension's master gardeners of Washington County, Laura grows most of the family's produce in the back yard of their Canonsburg home.

Jeff hunts and fishes, so they regularly have deer, turkey or perch to eat. They limit eating out to special occasions.

They do have a computer and Internet access, but they live with one television - without cable.

A teacher at Fort Cherry High School, Jeff started carpooling when the price of fuel increased, a move that saved the family even more money.
