| Festival to return for 21st year
With what festival organizers describe as renewed energy and new and expanded offerings, the Reister's Towne Festival returns to Main Street Sept. 8 and 9 for the 21st year. Festival executive director Kathy Gambrill said most of the entertainment is new to the festival this year, along with several new culinary choices and an expanded children's area. The festival kicks off Saturday morning, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. with the traditional parade along Main Street starting at Franklin Middle School. This year's parade grand marshal is well-known Reisterstown resident Calvin Reter, whose family has run groceries and crab houses for three generations. As in years past, the parade is set to include military units, car and motorcycle clubs, fire companies, elected officials, clowns and marching bands.
Man, Mango and Mojito
Kapolanialaimaka “Kapo" Kealoha is the Executive Chef at Tiki's Grill & Bar in Waikiki. Since he returned from culinary stints in Wyoming and Northern California to take the top job at Tiki's, he's worked to accomplish three things: create an all-new breakfast buffet service, expand the over-all level of food and service, and teach all employees how to pronounce his first name. We hear he's nailed the first two, but using the nickname “Kapo" just might indicate goal number three is a bit more elusive than first thought. Kapo's a local man, having attended Moanalua High School and then cracking the culinary arts books at the Travel Institute of the Pacific. He's got a ton of local experience under his belt, not including those two sojourns at the Four Seasons Hotels already alluded to in paragraph one.
Alton Brown returns to Charlotte Shout
Charlotte Shout's organizers on Friday announced the last link in their lineup: Food Network's Alton Brown will return for his second visit to the September culinary arts festival. Brown came in 2003 for Shout's second year, marking a turning point in the festival's growth into a sophisticated food event. Since then, chefs such as Wolfgang Puck and Anthony Bourdain have taken their places on the stage in Gateway Village on West Trade Street. The last time he was here, Brown drew so many fans there was a three-hour wait for book signings. That won't be a problem this time. Brown, host of the popular food science show "Good Eats" and the food travel show "Feasting on Asphalt," won't sign books. Instead, he'll take the stage at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 for a one-hour presentation.
Child obesity is a growing problem
Dubai: More children in the UAE are developing adult-oriented diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, largely due to obesity, according to health specialists. Some children as young as 10 for instance, have developed Type II diabetes, which once used to be known as adult-onset diabetes because it took years to develop. Is the country facing an obesity epidemic? Who is to blame? Dr V.J. Sebastian, head of cardiology department at Welcare Hospital, told Gulf News children were becoming 'mini-adults' due to obesity. "Children are getting fatter and fatter at a younger age. I had a 13-year-old patient who was 110kg. I had to put him on anti-cholesterol drugs because he had high cholesterol and I couldn't lower his weight enough with diet and exercise," he said.
